While we were staying at Oak Flat, I decided to do a little exploring to see if we could find an entrance to the other side of the Devil's Canyon. About a mile to the east of Oak Flat Campground, there is a dirt road that travels back along the east side of the Canyon. I didn't know it at the time, but the road goes on for miles and miles. I was hoping that it would eventually allow me to get close to the magnificent hoodoos I had spotted while camping at Oak Flat. After I found a descent campsite, I decided to turn around, and leave further exploration of the road for our next trip to the area.
Near the entrance, I discovered a cliff that was covered in a spectacular display of California poppies. To get the following pictures I had to do a little rock climbing to get to the patch I wanted to photograph - a little scary.
Hopefully this access to the canyon will remain open when mining activity closes down Oak Flat. There are several descent dispersed campsites along this road. Lots more to come, folks!
