This totally breaks my heart! A couple of years ago, Don and I spent several weeks off and on near the main campground at Oak Flat, which is now in the middle of a bitter battle between the government and local Apache tribes who view the land as Sacred. This was one of the areas that Tonto National Forest Rangers directed us to when we were staying in the area.
During our stay I took several hikes on the flats and into the Canyon and took quite a few pictures to document the natural beauty of the area. Now I am so totally heartbroken that this sacred area may be totally destroyed by mining activity. It truly is a national treasure, and should be saved for the enjoyment of generations to come. I feel rather lucky now that I was able to explore this area so extensively before it is lost forever. I will be making several posts in the weeks to come and post as many pictures of the area as I can - so stay tuned!
